Simultaneous

This style of translation was born after World War II, with th Nuremberg Trials. It is performed by a staff of interpreters ans technical personnel outfitted with receptors, booths and other equipment. "Simultaneous interpretation" allows a speaker's message to be heard in several languges almost at once (thus, "simultaneous") by use of special equipment, in this case tuning in the desired channel on a receptor. A variation of simultaneous interpretation is that know as "chuchotage" or "whispering".

"Whispering" is either used for events where there is only one person needing interpretation, or combined with "consecutive" interpretation.

Consecutive

"Consecutive interpretation" was exclusively use in international forums before the dawn of simultaneous translation.

Nowadays, it is only employed when no more than two languages are spoken per room. The name itself implies that it is slower, since the interpreter recreates the speaker's presentation, thereby doubling the duration of the event (it is given in the languge of oringin and the target language). It is most common in situaltions such as speeches, neetings, press conferecnces, etc. This variety of translation does not require technical equipment or support.
